Seneca Falls Veterinary Hospital

Seneca Falls Veterinary Hospital on River Road in Seneca Falls has been serving the area since the 1950s.  In March of 2006, Dr. Carl Darby, VetMB, DABVP, purchased the practice from Dr. Herbert Holden and continued a tradition of compassionate care for animals.  Combined with investments in new equipment, and the ability to consult an online community of resources, the business has grown steadily over the past two years.

In veterinary medicine for 17 years, Dr. Darby’s first exposure to the Finger Lakes was when he traveled to Seneca Falls to inquire about purchasing the business.  Coming from Long Island, he enjoys the area and finds the people here more laid back and easy to deal with.  Certified in avian medicine, Dr. Darby works with several organizations that deal with bird rescues and exotic animals.  In addition to dogs, cats, and other normal pets, he has worked with snakes, lizards, a turkey vulture and a wallaby, which looks similar to a small kangaroo.

The business has experienced strong growth over the past two years especially, which Dr. Darby attributes to their level of care and wide range of services.  The business has invested in modern equipment, which allows for rapid diagnosis and treatment of animals on-site.  Capabilities include ultrasound, surgeries, and digital x-rays, which can be emailed to specialists for quick response.  In fact, the facility is transitioning to a paperless environment, for an overall more efficient system.  Dr. Darby is also a member of an online community, which allows him to share information and obtain additional expertise.  This access to resources allows the facility to handle more difficult and non-typical situations.

Another highly valued service that Seneca Falls Veterinary Hospital offers its client base is emergency service during non-office hours.  The nearest 24-hour animal hospitals are in Rochester and Syracuse.  Call frequency from existing customers ranges from several times per week to as many as several per night, especially in the warmer weather months, when pets are outside more often.

With the growth in client base, the business has expanded to two full-time veterinarians and eight staff.  Significant remodeling has been done inside to accommodate modern equipment and facilitate the diversity of services offered.  Plans to expand the building in the next few years will add to the 21 recovery cages and provide enclosed walking cages for recovering animals.

For the long-term service to the community and success of the Seneca Falls Veterinary Hospital, the Chamber is proud to recognize the business as its May Business of the Month.
